Nutrition and Supplementation
This condition is due to a systemic imbalance, and therefore, can be improved through diet. Eat a high-fiber diet. Foods high in fiber include whole grains, wheat bran, fresh fruits, and almost all vegetables. Apples, broccoli, carrots, green beans, pears, and peas are especially good. Adequate water (8 to 10 glasses each day) is the best stool softener and helps pre vent constipation.
Try to stay away from fats and animal products. High-protein diets are more difficult to digest.
Bleeding hemorrhoids can be helped by eating foods high in vitamin K, such as alfalfa and dark green, leafy vegetables.
Nutritionists recommend the following daily supplements for help in treating hemorrhoids:
- calcium (1500 mg)-essential for blood clotting
- magnesium (750 mg)-balances calcium
- vitamin C (3000 to 5000 mg)-encourages normal blood clotting; promotes healing
- bioflavonoids (100 mg)
- vitamin E (600 IU)-promotes healing and blood clotting
- viltamin B complex (50 to 100 mg 3 times daily, with meals)-aids in proper digestion, which puts less strain on the rectum
- potassium (99 mg)-commonly deficient in those with constipation
- vitamin D (600 IU)-heals mucous membranes and tissues; needed for calcium absorption
